The holiday season is upon us! This is such an exciting time for many people. You get to see family and friends, take time off from work, and eat lots of great food. But it can also be very stressful. You may have to see family and friends that you don’t get along with, you’re swamped at work and don’t feel like you can take the time off, or you’re watching your waistline and avoiding the fatty treats.
If you’re hosting a holiday get together at your house, this can add even more stress. You want to finish last minute home improvement projects, clean all the cobwebs out of the spare bathroom that nobody ever uses, and finally trim the bushes underneath the front window.
Here are a few of our top tips to help you prepare for the holiday season.
As soon as you clean up after Thanksgiving, start thinking about what you’ll do to prepare and put it on your calendar. Schedule a day for cleaning the house, putting up the lights outside, and decorating the tree. Head out to the grocery store and stock up on everything you’ll need to bake cookies. You can divide this out over a few weeks so you won’t even notice it in your budget.
You don’t have to do it all on your own. Tap into your family and friends and get their help with some of the tasks on your list. If your spouse is a great organizer, have them place the ornaments on the tree. If your niece loves to be in the kitchen, invite her over for a cookie-baking day. Provide your father-in-law with a drink and a snack and he’ll likely be glad to come help you put up lights or other lawn decorations.
You want everything to be perfect but don’t forget that you’re only human and there’s only 24 hours in a day. You still have to work, provide for your family, and sleep too. If you focus on the big stuff first, then when it gets to be December 20 and the small stuff isn’t accomplished yet, it’s no big deal. Nobody will notice that the presents don’t have 6” ribbon curls, or that the tree in the backyard doesn’t have any lights on it. Don’t stress yourself out over the small details that nobody else will remember by next year.
